The training is an annual requirement based on the calendar year. As such, you will be required to complete ethics training each year.
It is a legal requirement of the State Officials and Employees Ethics Act . The training is intended to familiarize you with laws, rules, and policies that apply to your ethical conduct as a University (state) employee. The Illinois Executive Ethics Commission has published a pamphlet discussing this training requirement entitled, "Why Ethics Training?" which provides additional explanation.
Those employees who are required to complete online ethics training must do so within the designated training period. A training window will be designated in the fall for University employees to complete the online training program. Offline ethics training can be completed at any time up through December 31st, but is restricted to use by only undergraduate employees, extra help workers, and medical residents.
You should discuss your training schedule with your supervisor. Since it is a state requirement based on your position, we are encouraging supervisors to allow employees time to train during work hours or right before/after a shift.
Failure to complete annual ethics training will result in the statutorily required reporting of your name to the Executive Inspector General. The penalties for noncompliance will be determined by the Illinois Executive Ethics Commission, based on authority granted within the law, in addition to any internal disciplinary action imposed by the University.

The online program takes between 30 and 60 minutes to complete.
There are a few ways to determine your status in the course. At the bottom of your screen, you will note the page you are on out of the total number of pages in the course. You can also select the “Contents” tab at the top navigation on the screen and locate the “Your Place” indicator to the right of your current location in the course. Additionally, if you log out of the course, upon re-entry, you will be able to view your percent of completion on the introductory page, prior to selecting the "Ethics Training for University Employees" option.
The course has been designed to allow you to proceed through the material in a sequential manner. As a result, the content in the Contents tab becomes hyperlinked once you have viewed that material in the course. However, the items you have not yet viewed sequentially, will be inaccessible. At the completion of the course, you will be able to use the Contents tab to navigate to any individual area of your choosing within the content.
No. Though the program contains several self-assessment questions, your responses will not be monitored. If you happen to answer a question incorrectly, the response will provide you with details as to which answer was correct and why.
The optimal screen resolution setting to avoid scrolling is 1024 X 768. However, scrolling can also be caused by personal settings, such as tool bars within the browser taking up space at the top of the window, browser text size, or task bars. Contact your respective Help Desk (UIUC/UIS: 217-333-3102; UIC: 312-996-4806) for assistance in tool bar removal and/or resolution modification.
There is likely a scroll bar on the right hand side of your screen. You can use the arrows on this bar to scroll down and review the remaining content. You may also contact your respective Help Desk for assistance in modifying your browser settings to avoid any scrolling requirements.
No. The course was designed so it can be completed in segments. If you log out of the program, you will be directed to the last page viewed upon logging back into the system.
First, make sure you are using the login ID provided by the University Ethics Office. Then, remember that you must use the unique password you created when you first logged in to the course. If you continue to have difficulty or have forgotten the password, please call the AITS Help Desk:
When you have successfully completed the online training, you will be able to print out a certificate, which you may retain for your records. Also, designated contacts within each unit have the authority to download status reports. These individuals, along with the University Ethics Office Staff can provide you with status information.
Please Note: Status reports are delayed approximately 24 hours from the time of completion until the record is updated in the University Ethics Office Online Reporting Tool.
**Please note: Some browsers, including Internet Explorer (IE), might require that you change a setting to get the best-looking printed certificate. See the following FAQ for further instruction.
The University Ethics Office does not require you to print a certificate of completion. You may choose to print a certificate of completion for your personal records, but the University Ethics Office will receive an electronic copy of your completion from the training system. As such, unless you choose to print a copy for personal use or one is required by your department, there is no requirement this certificate must be printed.
If you have completed the course and viewed your certificate on the final page of the program, it is possible a Pop-up blocker is preventing you from proceeding to the survey. You can contact your respective Help Desk (UIUC/UIS: 217-333-3102; UIC: 312-996-4806) for assistance in allowing pop-ups from the site. If you know how to disable your Pop-up blocker, you can do so. Please note you may have to move back a page or two and proceed back through the course to get the survey to appear. Additionally, make sure your survey is not appearing in a second window behind your completion page.
The survey is designed to allow employees the opportunity to provide feedback throughout the training window. As a result, the survey will be accessible each time you log into the course, unless you have a pop-up blocker preventing it. The results are compiled immediately upon your initial completion of the survey, so you do not need to be concerned with completing it a second time. To return to the course content, close the browser window for the survey whereby you will arrive at the final screen of the course. From there, select the “Contents” link at the top of the page and navigate to your desired content from there by selecting one of the hyperlinked options.
Not necessarily. Due to the cutoff for determining our employee training population, it is possible an employee being paid by another unit over the summer months may not appear on your report, even though they are now working in your unit. To determine if they need to train, please use the "UIN Search" feature on the reporting tool to find their individual training record. You will need to enter the nine-digit UIN without any spaces or hyphens to conduct the search. If they do not appear after the search, please call the University Ethics Office at: 866-758-2146 so we can assist you in identifying the training requirements for this particular individual.
Ethics New Hire Orientation: An Introduction to the State Officials and Employees Ethics Act has been added to the NESSIE New Hire Task List. When your employee goes through the New Hire Process, they will complete an orientation program that will satisfy the legislative requirement which requires all new hires to complete training within the first 30 days of employment. For additional information related to this requirement, please visit the New Hire Orientation section of our Web site.
If you have not received your training notification and are a paid employee of the University of Illinois, you should contact the University Ethics Office via e-mail at: ethicsofficer@uillinois.edu or via the Ethics Toll-free Help Line at: 866-758-2146. Please provide your University Identification Number (UIN) so Ethics Office staff are able to locate your record.
