Preamble
The University of Illinois System was founded with a central focus on the role higher education can play in promoting the public good for the state of Illinois and beyond. Now well into its second century of groundbreaking teaching and research, the U of I System has truly become the public’s university with a worldwide reputation for excellence. As individuals working on behalf of the U of I System, we all benefit when the system’s reputation shines.
The Ethical Principles and Values apply to the entire U of I System, including its universities, regional campuses, extensions, executive officers, faculty, staff, student and temporary employees, and volunteers and representatives acting as agents of the system. By applying the tenets of the Ethical Principles and Values in our dealings with each other, as well as when we have a decision to make or an action to take on behalf of the system, we ensure the best possible results while promoting the public good, not only in Illinois, but worldwide.
Ethical Principles and Values
The University of Illinois System plays a crucial and distinctive role in serving the public good. Our three universities are the innovators of an even better tomorrow for our state and nation, providing a world-class education that prepares students to be leaders both in the workplace and as civic-minded members of their communities. From the very beginning, we have fulfilled that vital mission as a public trust - an original land-grant university that has built on generations of support to become a global leader in education and innovation.
Our unique role brings distinctive responsibilities for all who work on behalf of the system. We share a duty as role models for students and society, and an obligation to prudently steward the public's generous investment. As in our academic and research programs, we have set high standards for excellence, guided by these Principles and Values for employees, volunteers, and representatives acting as agents of the system. It is a compass for our actions, our decisions, and our bedrock commitment to integrity, equity, inclusion, transparency fairness, and professionalism. Every employee is responsible for reading, understanding, and adhering to these Principles and Values and associated policies.
When acting on behalf of the University of Illinois System, we will be intentional and deliberate in our actions to ensure integrity and to maintain and strengthen the public's trust and confidence. Excellence will not be pursued or achieved at the expense of integrity.
