Exemplify equity, inclusion, and diversity
We are proud of our diverse and inclusive system. Our faculty, staff, and student body hail from every corner of the globe, from every rung of the economic ladder, and from a myriad of cultural and ethnic backgrounds. Inclusiveness is one our greatest strengths because it allows us to bring different perspectives to learning, to problem solving, and to breaking down barriers that impede progress.
To ensure our diversity continues to flourish and expand, every member of our community must exhibit courtesy, dignity, and mutual respect. While disagreement and informed debate are valued and critical to the learning process, demeaning, intimidating, threatening, bullying, or violent behaviors depart from this standard. We must each balance our right to freedom of speech with responsibility for our words and actions.
We support fair and equitable policies and processes in admissions and employment, and in access to and treatment in university programs and activities. We strive to normalize the representation of those who are underrepresented and help everyone develop their unique potential and value while they are associated with the U of I System.
